The Michigan Technological University Senate gathered on Sep. 11 to welcome new and long-standing members of the senate body. The first meeting of the semester gave an overview of the senate’s responsibilities, duties, and procedures for the upcoming academic year.

Michigan Tech’s Senate is made up of both faculty and staff, fostering collaboration on important issues. Their goal is to promote both faculty and staff interests, discuss and amend academic policies, and support commerce and industrialism in the state of Michigan. Each senate meeting covers three agenda items: reports provided by the president or committee chair representative, information about the reports, and proposals. Thursday’s Senate meeting brought no new proposals, only the unfinished business of the Senate budget, which passed by a unanimous vote. Senate President Robert Hutchinson, who has been on the Senate body for the past ten years, gave some insight into policies he is excited to discuss in the coming academic year. “There will be some focus on the guidelines regarding the growth of global campus,” which aims to incorporate a more dedicated and expansive online learning environment for students. “I’ve really come to enjoy the work,” Said Hutchinson, reflecting on his time in the Senate.
