The first Friday of September brought more than just rain to campus—it also brought students, faculty, and staff together for the Graduate Student Government’s (GSG) First Friday Social. Originally scheduled for the Grad Commons Patio, the event moved indoors to the MUB Commons after a storm rolled through.
Despite the change of plans, the energy inside the MUB was lively. Tables filled quickly as students mingled over food and drinks, music played in the background, and a pool table drew a steady crowd. For many, the event offered a welcome break from the first busy week of classes.
“It’s a good opportunity to connect and get to know people and have fun,” said Sabri, an MBA student. Another attendee noted the importance of events like this, adding, “It is important to have such events to encourage making connections and getting to know people and community.”
The First Friday Social is part of a long-running GSG tradition designed to help students meet across departments in a relaxed setting. Organizers say the goal is to create spaces that encourage friendships and community outside of the classroom.
The series also reflects GSG’s broader mission: to support graduate students while strengthening ties across the Michigan Tech community. The socials are expected to return later this academic year, with updates posted on their Instagram, @mtugsg, as well as their website, www.gsg.mtu.edu.
