Curated Tips for Freshmen

As an incoming freshman, the first few weeks can be quite overwhelming, and there are a number of things that students can do to overcome this feeling. Alexandra Putwen, the director of residence education at Michigan Tech, has given a few tips on how to make the first few weeks easier. “Say yes to new things: Over the next few weeks, you’ll be invited to participate in so many activities. Say yes! Go to presentations, join a game on Walker Lawn, check out your hall council. If you’re invited to something, go. You may not think you are interested in the topic, but it could open a whole new world for you, and you’ll make connections with more people around campus. This is incredibly true, as most students will find their group of friends through these first few opportunities.

On top of this, your roommate will be the first chance you get at making a lifelong friend. “Do your roommate agreement: Even though it’s early, it’s important to talk with your roommate about what you’re both expecting,” says Putwen. “Have a real conversation about what you want your relationship to look like and how you want to communicate if things start to bother you. If things do start to bother you, address them right away so they don’t grow. Not sure where to start? Your RA is here to help guide you through that conversation.”

Michigan Tech is a very special school. The remoteness comes as a blessing in disguise. Because you can’t go home for a weekend often, it encourages you to explore campus and the Keweenaw on your weekends. In embracing our culture, you will also find many more opportunities to find your people. Hockey games provide an incredible outlet for fun, getting involved in student organizations to meet new people, and making ramen at midnight in the kitchenette can lead you to find lifelong friends.

As far as education goes, the learning centers are incredibly beneficial to student success. Utilize these as needed for all classes. Professors will list office hours andtake advantage of these as much as possible. Advisors can also give further guidance on classes, schedules and class resources. Everyone at Michigan Tech wants to see you succeed and grow, so take advantage of all that is offered.
