Tri out a triathlon at Michigan Tech’s annual indoor triathlon

Last Wednesday, Apr. 2, the fourth annual Michigan Tech Indoor Triathlon took place at the SDC. Unlike a traditional triathlon, where the competition is distance-based, the indoor triathlon is time-based. The event consisted of a ten minute swim, a 15 minute bike, and a ten minute run. Each leg of the race was scored with the first-place contestant in the category getting one point and the second-place contestant receiving two points, and the overall winners being decided by which participant had the lowest point total.

This year’s competition had 26 participants across both the men’s and women’s divisions. The overall winner for the female division of the event was a tie between Eva Fillipi and Carinn Tryon, and the overall winner for the male division was Caleb Bey.

Annie Bengry, the Assistant Director of Recreation, Aquatics & Fitness, said that the Indoor Triathlon is “a fun and exciting event for participants of any ability level!” With the race being time-based instead of distance-based, Bengry stated that it allows the participants to “push towards their goals…without the intimidation of falling behind.”

The athletic staff helping conduct the event aims to create a motivating atmosphere that encourages participants of all abilities to participate and have fun, no matter their ability level. Skyler Spitzley, a member of the athletic staff, commented on how great it is to see people come out to support their friends and how the event feels like it brings everyone together. Bengry spoke further on this positive atmosphere, saying, “We promote a positive, upbeat event environment,” and further invites everyone to “sign up and [try] out the Indoor Triathlon next year!”
