Michigan Tech is offering a study abroad program to Barcelona, Spain this summer of 2025. It will be a six-week faculty-led program that allows students to take up to nine HASS credits, which can contribute to a Spanish minor.
The study abroad fees will include housing, two meals per day, laundry, insurance, transportation, and class-led excursions. Students choose to live with a Spanish host family alone or with another Tech student. The housing selection will be coordinated with the company WorldStrides to match student preferences with families This program provides the option of personal excursions on the weekends. For example, traveling from Barcelona to Paris is just a six hour trip on public transport.
There will be an itinerary provided during the program coinciding with the student’s chosen HASS classes. The classes have an English and Spanish option to consider all levels of Spanish. The itinerary is an updated version of the previous study abroad trip to Barcelona last summer to maximize students’ experience.
To attend this trip, students will need to pay the program’s fee, purchase a boarding ticket, and have their passports readily available. Students will also receive a boarding ticket. The price of the trip will be lowered with more students in attendance. A grant provided by the Humanities Department has helped keep costs low. Spanish professors Leyre Alegre-Figuero and Marcelino Viera will accompany students. Currently, 13 students have signed up, and more spots are available.
“You will have the opportunity to gain a new out-of-body experience and then be able to compare the mannerisms of Barcelona to the U.S. and gain valuable perspective,” said Marcelino Viera, Professor of Spanish and Cultural Studies at MTU.
For any additional information, email Professor Leyre Alegre-Figuero at lalegref@mtu.edu or Professor Marcelino Viera at mvierara@mtu.edu. There will be another informational session regarding the study abroad program in February, including additional information. Students with all levels of Spanish are welcome to join the trip, so feel free to reach out if interested in this opportunity.
