Huskies Curl earn silver at championship

In just their second year as a club, Huskies Curl took second place at the 2025 USA College Curling Championship, earning silver. The national championship consisted of 16 teams that qualified for the event by earning points throughout the season. Club president Gracie Kohn said, “We are very proud and excited, although a little disappointed in how we played,” when asked about the emotions of taking second place. The team lost to UW-Madison in the finals after previously being undefeated in the tournament. The championship was held on Mar. 6-9 in Midland, MI.

Huskies Curl was projected to win the national championship in the last two years before falling short. Last year, in its first year as a club, Husky Curl took third place, earning bronze. Although they have come up short, the club does not lack any motivation, as Kohn said, “Oh, we are going for gold next season”.

Kohn said, “Our strategy is the takeout, and we are very good at it, and a lot of teams do not know how to place against it,” when asked about their strategy. Kohn later went on to describe the team communication and bonding contributing to the success they have had.

The national team included Kohn in the skip position, Rese Elza in the vice position, Bryce Doering in the second position, Tyler Magnuson in the lead position, and Owen Stephenson and Joseph Sharland as team alternates. The team is coached by Gordan Maclean, who founded the Copper Country Curling Club.

Kohn described this season as amazing, with how the club performed, along with new members joining. The club has grown since last year, with over 25 new curlers who have had no experience prior. “As a club, we want to spread curling, share it with others, and give people a chance to try it out,” Kohn said about the club’s goals.
