Upcoming Local Foods Day

The Inter-Residence Housing Council (IRHC) is hosting Local Foods Day, an event where students may sample foods from a variety of local restaurants for free. This event will take place on Nov. 15 in the Wadsworth Annex from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., where students will have the opportunity to try food from the Forge, the Ambassador, Suomi, the Downtowner, Joey’s Seafood & Grill, Sky Sushi, Hunan Garden, Roy’s Pasties & Bakery, MUB Cocktails, and many more.

During this event, students will have the opportunity to try an unlimited amount of samples from each participating restaurant for free. “Not everyone has the extra funds to go out to eat and I think that that’s a really awesome part of Houghton, is our food experience, and I would like everyone to have the chance to try that,” says Madelin Burnau, President of the IRHC. The event also gives students a chance to discover which local restaurants they like best without having to dine a full meal at each of them, which would prove expensive and time-consuming.

Additionally, the event will strive to have some form of food that is inclusive for dietary restrictions. Vegan options, gluten-free options, and options for other dietary restrictions will be available. “We’re trying to make it so anyone and everyone can attend this event and have something they can enjoy, which I feel like is important for those with dietary restrictions,” states Matt Echols, the social chair of the IRHC.

Whether a student has funds for going out to eat or not, the Local Foods Day offers a chance for all students, regardless of diet, to experience the Upper Peninsula’s unique food culture at a single location and time.
