If you are looking to learn more about what you are voting for, the political clubs on campus may be a great place to start. Political clubs at Michigan Tech are an opportunity for students to learn about and express their political beliefs. There are several political clubs on campus including College Democrats at MTU, Keweenaw Socialists at Michigan Technological University, Young Americans for Freedom, and Turning Point USA.
Young Americans for Freedom is a conservative organization that meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. in Fisher 231. Their meetings consist of a short presentation by a student on any topic and a discussion on that topic and anything beyond. The goal is to create an open discussion where difference of opinion is welcome so that there is a free exchange of ideas. Election week this year also happens to fall on YAF’s freedom week which celebrates freedom throughout the world with events such as the Berlin Wall Memorial on Walker Lawn.
The Keweenaw Socialists at Michigan Technological University also meet on Monday nights at 7 p.m. in Fisher 130. The club provides political information via postings, events, and table tents about topics that are relevant for Tech students and politics. The club’s goal is to provide students with the information to understand what is happening in the world so that students are able to make informed decisions. They do this through events such as the speaker they had this weekend, Hani Bawardi, an Arab-American Immigrant and professor at University of Michigan-Dearborn who spoke about the history and future of the region.
The College Democrats at MTU meets on Fridays at 5 p.m. in Fisher 132. This is a newer club on campus that was founded during the spring semester in 2024. Their goal is to advocate for progressive ideals on campus. One of the ways they promote this is through canvassing in collaboration with the Houghton County Democrats. The club will be hosting a watch party for the election in Fisher 135.
Turning Point USA is a conservative club that meets on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in Fisher 131. The club stands for constitutional rights on campus, free-market capitalism, and non-oppressive college administrations according to their involvement link, however there was no response from the club when reached out to them.
All of the clubs encourage students to register and participate in voting this election and all future elections.
