Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

This campaign has been suspended and may not be visible on the Michigan ballot when voting in person.

Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Jr. is a long-time environmental lawyer and activist. RFK Jr. initially ran for the democratic party nomination, but later announced he would be running as an independent. In August, Kennedy suspended his campaign  and endorsed Donald Trump. He is currently trying to get his name removed from the ballot in swing states but is still planning on running in non-swing states.

Many of Kennedy’s views have shifted over time and over his campaign. This is a fact that he has addressed and said, “I will always change my position if you show me a set of facts that shows I’m wrong about it.” His running mate is Nicole Shanahan, who is an attorney from California.

Abortion: Kennedy reversed his initial position on abortion, which was in support of a ban after three months. In May of 2024 Kennedy said, “I think we have to leave it to the women rather than the state.”

Border policy: Kennedy has a plan called “high walls, wide gates,” which entails finishing the border wall and using technology to fill the spots not covered, but also plans to increase opportunities for legal immigration by increasing funding to asylum courts so cases can be processed quicker.

Climate change: Kennedy has been a long time advocate of environmental protection. In general, he is in support of less divisive environmental issues and would rather not focus on climate change.

Crime and guns: Kennedy is a firm believer in the right to bear arms. This being said, he has stated that he will not take people’s guns away and that he believes in gun control to a degree.

Economy: Kennedy has vowed on his website to raise the minimum wage to $15, enforce the law against union busting corporations, block ways that companies can strip workers of pensions and trade agreements. His website says, “Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is committed to being the strongest pro-labor President since the 1960s, as part of his broader commitment to restore a strong middle class in America.”

Healthcare: Kennedy has been known to be against vaccinations, but it should be noted that this has not been a major part of his campaign.

Foreign policy: Kennedy is largely anti-interventionist. He has strongly opposed continuing to back Ukraine and said he would immediately end the conflict. Similarly, his campaign said that he would make moves to de-escalate with China and remove “provocative policies.” He has not vowed to protect Taiwan. Kennedy also supports Israel and questioned the need for the ceasefire.
