Michigan Tech Hockey falls to Clarkson as Mitch’s Misfits celebrate 21st birthday

On Friday, Oct. 25, the Michigan Tech Hockey Team suffered its first loss of the season, 4-1, against Clarkson, kicking off a non-conference home series at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Neither team was able to score in the first period, however, Clarkson got on the scoreboard early in the second. The Huskies answered with a power play goal shortly after when a pass from Stiven Sardarian deflected off a Clarkson defender’s skate into the net. The tie was broken with only 1:33 left in the second period when Clarkson scored following a turnover in the offensive zone.

The Huskies were determined going into the third period, however, were unable to score on two back-to-back power plays. Instead, Clarkson was able to further their lead with a shorthanded goal. Tech pulled their goaltender late in the third period, allowing for Clarkson to score a final goal on a two man breakaway.

Despite the loss, the Huskies dominated shots on goal 32-17.

“We’re a much better team than we were a couple of weeks ago on Saturday night against Alaska,” said Head Coach Joe Shawhan. “We won that game, we didn’t win this hockey game and that’s the way the game goes. All in all, I would rather have the performance we had tonight. Something I feel we can build on, we saw some really good growth in some players.”

Friday’s game also celebrated Mitch’s Misfits’ 21st birthday. The Misfits are a staple of the student section leading the crowd in a multitude of chants and organizing trips to cheer on the Huskies at away games, priding themselves on being rowdy and loud.

“If you meet somebody from Michigan Tech and they know what Tech hockey is, they know the Misfits,” said Kellan Meloche, the President of Mitch’s Misfits.

The Misfits celebrated by inviting alumni to extend the student section at Friday’s game. An active student vs alumni hockey match was also held at Dee Stadium on Friday night.
