In 1951, the Calumet Air Force Station was a radar station established in Mohawk, MI by the U.S. Air Force. The location was one of many chosen for radar installation in an effort to secure the northern border of the U.S. from breaches. After nuclear advances there was fear of Soviet pilots using an arctic route to enter the U.S.
As of 1988 this was no longer an active military site, but went on to be used as the Keweenaw Academy reform school until 2005. Most equipment, buildings, and items were left behind, and time and weather created a state of disrepair. To make matters worse, there are issues arising with groundwater contamination.
Recently, in 2021, the site was purchased by the Open Skies Project and restoration efforts are being made. Buildings still present include: a radar tower, operations, housing, dining hall, fitness center, and even a fallout shelter. A one-mile walking tour is now available to book at openskiesproject.org for those looking to experience this piece of Keweenaw history.
