October recess is the perfect fall break in-between the beginning of the semester and Thanksgiving. The recess allows for a mental break from classes and homework, if professors are willing. With the changing seasons, many students have the ability to take this break to enjoy the beautiful fall colors of the UP. Other students use this time to connect with family and friends back in their hometowns.
I used this year’s October recess to have one last camping trip with some of my best friends at the tip of the Keweenaw. We enjoyed the beautiful fall colors on Schlatter Island. After completing this trip I talked with my friends, and we all thought it was one of the most beautiful, fun, and yet difficult trips we have taken. Without the October recess, this trip never would have been possible. As this is my last semester at this school, I could not imagine a better trip to take. I have always had amazing memories over the October recess these last few years, and with the subject of removing the break being prominent, I feel the new students of this school deserve the same.
Michigan Tech is known for its difficult classes and assignments, and having this recess is a great way to allow the students to enjoy a mental health break. Exams and midterm assignments have been consuming the lives of many students these last few weeks. The exhaustion and stress has been very visible on the faces of the students. This break is necessary to improve the mood and health of my fellow students studying at this school. Removing this break from our fall semester would continue to load stress on the students, which can cause worse test scores and assignment grades.
The Keweenaw is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in the US. The October recess allows MTU students to fully enjoy its beauty and be able to refresh themselves. Mental health is a huge part of the wellness of the student body and this recess can massively improve well-being at this college.
