Senior wide receiver Darius Willis made history by breaking Michigan Tech’s school record for most career touchdown receptions, previously held by Bill Hauswirth in 1985. Willis secured the record 25th touchdown reception during the game against the Davenport Panthers on Oct. 12 and added to his record this weekend against the Ferris State Bulldogs, bringing the record to 26 receiving touchdowns.
Willis gives a large credit to people around him for achieving this success:,“The support of my family, friends, teammates, and coaches is the only reason breaking any kind of record is possible. In every aspect of football, you rely on your teammates/coaches. The continued support from everyone around me instilled confidence in who I am as a person and a football player.”
The record-breaking play came from a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Fries. Willis executed a perfectly timed wheel route, and after the catch, dragged his defender into the endzone to secure the record.
Reflecting on his career, Willis recalled one of his most memorable moments, “One of the catches that come to mind first was at Wayne State in 2021. It was my first year playing and we were in a tight game with Wayne State and I ended up scoring twice that day. A lot of my family came up for that game so it was nice to win, and have a good game individually.”
Michigan Tech’s next home game is the 22nd installment of the Miner’s Cup against the Northern Michigan Wildcats, who are 0-7 this season. Last year, the Huskies beat the Wildcats with a score of 62-0, with Willis receiving two touchdowns. The Huskies have won the last 13 games against the Wildcats and are looking to bring the streak to 14 straight wins. The game is on Saturday, Oct. 26 with kickoff at noon.
