Gain hands-on experience with materials science and engineering lab equipment at Laboratory Equipment Corporation (LECO) Day on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the M&M room 433.
Hosted by the Applied Chemical and Morphological Analysis Laboratory (ACMAL), LECO Day offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with metallographic lab equipment from the Laboratory Equipment Corporation. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an hour break for a provided lunch at 11:30 a.m. in M&M room 407. The event is targeted towards any interested students and faculty.
Elizabeth Miller, ACMAL director, said events like these give Michigan Tech students the unique opportunity to interact with modern laboratory equipment themselves. She encourages interested students to bring in their own samples to be tested at the event. Braeden Apps, a Michigan Tech Materials Science Engineering alumni, when asked about the value of getting experience with lab equipment, said, “The lab experience translates really well from work to school, and vice versa…I would definitely recommend learning how to use the equipment Tech has to offer in the labs.”
ACMAL hosts various events similar to LECO Day for teaching students and faculty about Michigan Tech’s materials science lab equipment. Elizabeth Miller explained that along with these events, students who are working with a faculty advisor may be able to contact the lab to schedule training with the equipment.
In addition to learning about the lab equipment, Miller said these experiences are useful for building relationships with industry partners. These relationships can turn into work experiences which, according to Apps, are helpful to give a good foundation for schoolwork and are valuable for students looking to learn and bolster their skills.
