Michigan Tech’s Inter-Residence Housing Council (IRHC) is putting on SafeHouse this Sunday, Oct. 27 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the MTU residence halls. SafeHouse is an event for the community and residence hall students to come together to provide a safe space for trick-or-treating.
The event invites families to trick-or-treat through the halls of Wadsworth, McNair, and Douglas Houghton, where students will pass out candy and host activities. Costumes are encouraged for both the students and children participating.
The main goal of the event is to foster the connection between campus and the community, “It’s rewarding to see a couple hundred families come out,” said Noah Spranger, IRHC Treasurer, “Students get to engage and have fun with the local community and kids.”
Jeremy Kloosterman, IRHC programming chair, also shared that sentiment, “We reach out to the local community and invite them onto campus, so all the local kids can come here and have a safe space to trick or treat,” he said. “It’s a great time for both the students to throw a fun party for kids and for the local communities to engage with the college.”
SafeHouse has been a tradition at Tech since the late 1980s. The exact year is disputed, but it is approaching its 40th year. Outside of bridging campus with the community, this event also provides students with a team-based activity, paralleling some of the group work found in classes at Tech.
Safety measures will also be in place during the event, such as crossing guards. For more information on the event or how to get involved, contact the IRHC through their involvement link or reach out to a Resident Assistant.
