This past Monday marked the ten-year anniversary of the unveiling of the Husky Statue, located at the center of Michigan Tech’s campus. The statue was revealed in a ceremony on Oct. 13, 2014, and stands over nine feet tall at 1,600 pounds upon a 1.8 billion year old boulder from Baraga County.
The boulder itself was donated by alumnus Roland Hutala and weighs a whopping 19 tons. The statue was made possible by donations from over 840 alumni, with the greatest contribution coming from Dan and Joan Lorenzetti.
The unveiling ceremony was soon followed by students mounting the structure for the next best selfie opportunity, as there was no sign directing students to stay off. The Lode was present at the ceremony all those years ago, and while many students thought the statue was far more impressive than they imagined, some questioned the usefulness of the benches in the plaza during the long cold season.
After a full ten years, the Husky Statue has become a staple on Michigan Tech’s campus.
