Quiet Living; Thrifting and antiquing in the area

With the rising prices of clothes, thrift stores are becoming the new shopping mall. There are three thrift stores in the Houghton/Hancock area including Goodwill, St. Vincent’s, and Keweenaw Consignment. With quite a few options it can be hard deciding where to go.  “St. Vinnys is the spot, you always leave with something good,” says Jackson Sanderson, a student at Michigan Tech.

St. Vincents in Hancock is one of the few thrift stores that reliably has good clothes at good prices. Goodwill and other chain thrift stores have noticed the recent flood of thrifty shoppers and have increased their prices as well. Gethyn Evans, a Michigan Tech student, says that Keweenaw Consignment is his favorite thrift store; they have everything from couches to books to suits. Evans recommends going to the local thrift stores as well for the better prices and better choices. Keweenaw Consignment is a large consignment shop that caters to all styles of clothing and decor.

If you are willing to go for a drive there are some fantastic local antique shops in Chassell along the highway. There are shops with local copper, fur pelts, and other antiques for a very reasonable price. Calumet also offers many antiquing options. For those who do not have a car, the closest walk to a thrift store is St. Vincent’s right across the bridge in Hancock.
