Quiet Living; Canning and fermenting

Have you ever wanted to preserve your favorite parts of the farmers’ market? Or maybe have an early-mid-life crisis and make your very own beer? While the produce is still fresh, you should learn how to can and ferment! Here are some tips to get you started with these simple and easy ways to preserve almost any food.

Basic Methods: To can high-acidity foods, you only need a large pot, a few mason jars, and a way to ensure the cans do not touch the pot’s bottom. Fermenting is even easier, needing only salt and a mason jar, and can be utilized to preserve fruits, vegetables, and even dairy.

Be Cautious: These methods can be dangerous if the correct procedures are not followed, so do your research.

Upgrade: If canning appeals to you, consider upping your game and buying a pressure cooker. The higher heat and pressure allows the canning of almost anything!

Know what’s in your food; make it yourself!
