On Saturday, Oct. 5, Michigan Tech defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a Rugby match with a score of 41-24. The game started off with a UW-Stout score, but Michigan Tech followed up immediately after, scoring twice consecutively. Following that, UW-Stout responded by scoring twice in a row. Michigan Tech followed up with an additional score and ended the half. In the second half, Michigan Tech went on a massive scoring run, scoring four consecutive times. In response, UW-Stout scored once more, which would be the last score of the game.
Jean Dapprich, the Coach of the Women’s Rugby team, said that the team has to work on defensive flatline. Dapprich highlighted some standout players, saying, “Sundrop, our young Sophia, is new to full-backing and they’re getting in it and they are really good at chasing tackles, so any of the other team who breaks our lines and goes into score, Sundrop is always there to get them. Then Rissa… they got two tries today, and they’re a new kid and they never played rugby before so they’re our shining star right now, and other than that, my two locks are really helping out those forwards on keeping them all straight.”
The next Women’s Rugby game will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lower Soccer Fields. Their next opponent is Eau Claire. The game is open to both MTU students and the public.
