Quiet Living: Baking Tips from the olden days

Sometimes, the best baking tips come from generations past. Here are a few clever tips to make your time in the kitchen smoother:

  • Prevent browning apples: Soak apple slices in water with a splash of lemon juice to keep them looking fresh.
  • Measure honey easily: Coat your measuring spoon or cup with oil, butter, or fat before adding honey, and it’ll slide right out without problems.
  • Chop onions tear-free: Try placing a quarter slice of bread between your teeth with a bit sticking out while chopping onions–this old trick keeps the tears away.
  • Avoid breaking an omelet: Place the pan under a hot broiler for a few seconds to keep your omelet intact–it helps set the top perfectly.
  • Clean burned aluminum pans: Boil water with some onions in the pan, and the burned bits will float to the top. For stubborn stains, boil potato peels to remove discoloration.
