First Annual Tech Trails Trot

Michigan Tech Cross Country is hosting the first annual Tech Trails Trot on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. Copper Country Running Company is sponsoring the event and is awarding four pairs of free shoes to participants of the event.

The event will be held at the Michigan Tech Trails and will consist of both 10k and 5k races, as well as a Little Huskies 2k run, which will not be timed. Registration information can be found online. Entry fees vary depending on the race, with the 10k fee being $40, 5k being $25, and 2k being $15. All proceeds will benefit the MTU Cross Country team thanks to the Copper Country Running Company’s generous support. In addition, one male and one female participant from both the 10k and 5k will be selected to win free shoes from the Copper Country Running Company.

Clayton Sayen, the Assistant Coach for Cross Country and Track & Field at MTU, as well as the General Manager of Copper Country Running Company, are playing a big role in organizing the event. “I wanted to create an event for the community to engage in the fall XC season. I owe a lot to MTU XC and I wanted to give back to them in any way possible,” said Sayen. Sayen also explained that his experience in race directing through the Copper Country Running Company, combined with valuable connections with community members, opened many doors for putting on a successful event.

Zeb Swager, a second-year student athlete for Michigan Tech Cross Country, says he likes that the event gives people an opportunity to see the trails in a race scenario, like he does as part of the team. “I am also super excited to be able to spread my love of running and competing with my peers out into the greater community while supporting the cross-country team,” Swager expressed when asked what excites him most about this event. As a final remark, Swager noted how special it is to share the sport with others.
