USG swears in new representatives, confirms new orientation plan, and passes allocation requests

At the USG weekly meeting, Kellie Raffaelli, the Dean of Students, presented on the new summer orientation plan, there were newly elected representatives who were sworn in and subsequently voted on allocations and a bylaw amendment.

A new two-day orientation in mid-summer has been added to facilitate better communication, improve orientation shopping, and smooth administrative issues. Initially, a small committee recommended the change and a larger one with representation from Student Affairs, IT, Financial Aid, Admissions, Registrar, Academic Advising, Math, Housing, Facilities, USG, and Husky Eats determined the details. This session will serve as a friendship builder and as a reminder to submit things like AP scores to avoid scheduling headaches. Virtual sessions will be available for international students or those who can’t make it.

Next, first year, residential, and College for Forest Resources and Environmental Science representatives were sworn in to USG. They will be featured on the USG Instagram and website in October. In addition, the USG website, usg.mtu.edu, will get a refresh with a new user interface and design.

The Political Affairs Committee reported success in their voter registration campaign and extended an invitation to a watch party for the Vice Presidential debate Tuesday, Oct. 1 in Fisher. Student Affairs reported that Residential Living (Housing) denied installing Narcan stations in the dorms, citing response time and vandalism. Other topics include the removal of McNair triple rooms, the end of Flex Housing, and a Wadsworth dining hall remodel.

Allocations discussed at the meeting consisted of $1,500 for the Swing Club’s Halloween dance at the Calumet Theater and $2,000 for Huskies Curl to purchase an inflatable curling set. Both allocations passed, as did a bylaw amendment to allow the vice president of USG to excuse members from office hours in extreme circumstances.
