This past Wednesday, Sep. 18, the USG held their weekly meeting in which they discussed new constitution and by-law changes, voted on numerous Ways and Means (WAM) allocations, and voted on the resignation of a USG member.
Lily Ketelsen, the treasurer for USG, had a discussion with the GSG about adding a seventh member to the WAM committee that is from GSG. Ketelsen’s reasoning for this proposal is that graduate students make up 16 percent of the student population and therefore should have a say in where the funds are allocated. This addition would require a change in the USG constitution.
Isobel Bowker and Cole Pierucki also proposed a by-law amendment to Article III, Section 1, which covers the rules on USG members being excused from office hours. Their proposed amendment gives the Vice President discretion over extreme circumstances.
In unfinished business, WAM recommended an allocation of $300 from the reserve fund to the Cricket Club to purchase new equipment. In new business, Elise Buzzell has resigned from her position on the USG as public relations committee member. Buzzell stated that, “Due to increased personal commitments, I find it necessary to step down in order to prioritize my well being and my other responsibilities.” The board voted 16-0-1 in favor of accepting her resignation.
If you are interested in attending USG meetings, they are held weekly in the Alumni Lounge of the Memorial Union Building from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. For more information visit the USG website at https://www.usgatmtu.mtu.edu/.
