Here on Michigan Tech’s campus, it is common knowledge that there are less females on campus than males. Sure there’s many things that are different between males and females, but diseases and illnesses affect anyone, regardless of their gender. Surprisingly, many people do not know that Breast Cancer can affect men as well as women. In 2017, it is estimated that there will be around 300,000 new cases of Breast Cancer diagnosed in women and around 3,000 new cases of Breast Cancer diagnosed in men in the United States alone.
To raise awareness for this serious and potentially life threatening disease, the Michigan Tech based Society of Intellectual Sisters (SIS) are putting on a Bra Show on April 8 in the Forestry Atrium. It is an event held every year by SIS to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer. All the proceeds made will be donated to The National Breast Cancer Foundation
In preparation for the Bra Show in April, students and other community members are able to design a bra, or collect supplies to make one later, at a workshop held in Fisher 132 on March 23 and 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you can’t make it to one of the workshops you can still design and make a bra for the show, just make sure to attend the dress rehearsal on April 7 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Every year there is a new theme for the Bra Show.
This year’s theme is outer space, so the show is sure to be out of this world! The Bra Show also has voluntary male models that will show off the one of a kind bras. If you would like to volunteer to be a model in this year’s show, you can contact the Society of Intellectual Sisters at sis-l@mtu.edu. Anyone can be diagnosed with Breast Cancer, it is not an exclusive disease. The best way to prevent any kind of illness is to stay educated about it. The Bra Show is a great way to show support for those diagnosed with Breast Cancer and to raise awareness about the disease. Stay educated with your fellow Huskies and join The Society of Intellectual Sisters in their mission to raise awareness for Breast Cancer.
