Quiet Living: Things you can do with what you have

Need a way to refresh your space while being eco-friendly? Here are some easy ways to up-cycle some items that are probably sitting around your dorm or bedroom:

  1. Flower Pots: Give old mugs, jars, or teacups a second life as flower pots or plant holders. Add a layer of rocks or gravel at the bottom for drainage, fill with potting soil, and plant your favorite greens or flowers. It’s an easy way to bring life to a space with reusable materials.
  2. Jars as Stylish Holders: Clean out and reuse empty jars for decorative storage containers. You can paint them with vibrant colors or wrap them in twine for more personality. Jars are versatile and can be used to store everything from pens and pencils to pasta and grains. In addition, you can place lights in jars and paint them to make them cool decorations.
  3. Cardboard Box Organizers: Transform cardboard boxes into practical drawer dividers or desk organizers. Cover them with colorful paper or paint them to make them more visually appealing. They’re perfect for keeping small items like office supplies or craft materials neatly arranged.
  4. Rugs from Old Blankets: Revamp worn blankets into cozy, handmade rugs. Simply cut the blanket into strips and braid or weave them together to create a unique, soft rug. This is a great way to add warmth and character to your floors while reusing materials you already have.

By up-cycling these everyday items, you not only save money but also contribute to a more sustainable environment. Before discarding something, consider how it might be creatively repurposed!
