Michigan Tech nightlife is an alluring part of the student experience, but it is important to remember safety and harm reduction if taking part. Tech officially recognizes substance abuse on its associated webpage, highlighting that 49% of responding students in The National Core Alcohol and Drug Survey (2006) said they consumed five or more drinks in a single sitting. 37% of students in that same survey reported using marijuana at least once in their life, and 13% reported using marijuana in the past 30 days.
With these activities taking place, it’s important to practice harm reduction and safety. Practicing the recovery position is an easy and impactful way to help others, being sure anyone showing signs of alcohol poisoning is properly on their side and with someone to take care of them. Michigan Legislature Section 333.7404 outlines the Good Samaritan law, stating “individuals acting in good faith will not be charged according to controlled substances they are linked to.”
Limits and abstinence are also personal ways to keep in line with Michigan Tech policy, as well as ways to keep yourself and your body healthy. If you or anyone you know needs help on campus, emergency phones have been set up with a blue light to reach Public Safety 24/7. Michigan Tech Public Safety is a trained and certified law enforcement authority on campus, and exists to help anyone in Houghton County.
