K-Day welcomes students on 9/06

On Sep. 6 students traveled to Chassell Centennial Park to attend K-Day. The event started at 1 p.m., with the university wide recess starting at 12 p.m. so students could be free for the event. K-Day, short for Keweenaw Day, is always held on the Friday of Labor Day week. Typically, K-Day sees 3,500-4,000 students in attendance; this year 196 student organizations participated in the event. At the event, students had the opportunity to learn about ways they can get involved with the many extracurricular opportunities at Tech. Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) can range from social, club sports, academic, service, and everything in between.

Taylor Piering, the Coordinator of Registered Student Organizations for Student Leadership and Involvement, was in charge of coordinating K-Day. Piering told The Lode, “I think being involved with student organizations is really good for students as a whole.” K-Day serves as an important way for students to connect with many of the 240 student organizations at Tech. An extensive list of RSOs may be found on Involvement Link.

Adam, with the disc golf club, explained why he was there, saying, “It is just a good way to get outside, walk around the woods, and have something to do”. Adam explained that Tech had “recently updated it [the disk golf course] and made it a full course,” and he wanted to promote this to anyone who was interested.

Besides chatting with clubs, there were many activities for students to participate in, ranging from axe throwing, lawn games, and inflatable obstacle courses. Many of the activities were run by RSOs. There were also a variety of food options at the event, including Curious Pig, Flavor Blast, MTU Catering, and Suomi Pasties. Throughout the event, The Huskies Pep Band played, creating a lively spirit, and the brisk weather did nothing to dampen the mood.

Piering reminded students that there are a lot of “different ways that being involved in a student organization rounds out your Michigan Tech experience.”
