The Keweenaw Roller Derby (KRD) closed out their final game of the season this weekend at the Calumet Colosseum with a 178 to 73 victory over the Kingsford Krush, finishing the season with a 2-2 record.
The highly physical sport of roller derby requires two teams of five skaters racing around the track, with each team having a “jammer” whose purpose is to lap the members of the opposing team to score points with the rest of the players aiming to assist their jammer and block the other team’s jammer. The sport gives a unique experience to spectators by combining strategy with full-contact hits.
When asked how this season was compared to previous years, the KRD’s coach, “Malicious Intent,” described it as a success. “We did really well this season, we have the largest team we’ve ever had in KRD history, a full roster for the whole season, and the players are really playing well together.”.
For those looking to get involved, the head referee, known as “The Infallible Irony Man” said, “Reach out to your local team, most of them are eager to take on new people!” For those interested in learning more about next year’s season or looking to join, more information is available on the Keweenaw Roller Derby website and Facebook page.
