As freshmen step onto Michigan Tech’s campus for the first time, they’re not just beginning their academic journey but also diving into a community brimming with opportunities to make connections that will last a lifetime. From joining clubs to attending events, here’s a comprehensive guide to getting involved and making friends around campus.
Joining clubs is one of the most effective ways to get involved and make new connections on campus; fellow members share similar interests, making it relatively easy to create new friendships. Tech has a diverse selection of student clubs catering to every interest. Among the many options, students can explore the adrenaline-pumping world of rock climbing with the Ridge Roamers, discover new realms with Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts, or get active with club baseball. The community surrounding the many different clubs is one of the best parts about coming to Tech.
For those seeking a tight-knit community and opportunities for leadership, Greek Life at Tech provides just that. Being part of a group that is always involved, putting on events, and interacting with other Greek life, you are bound to create lasting memories. With a focus on service, scholarship, and social activities, Greek organizations offer a full college experience.
For freshmen interested in influencing campus policies and planning events, getting involved in student government is the way to go. “Being in USG (Undergraduate Student Government) has opened me up to so many opportunities to be involved on campus. I have been on committees to write new campus policies, connected with nearly every Student Organization, represented the students to the administration and beyond, and participated in a host of other projects,” shares Ben Conlin, At-Large representative, and new USG President. Through initiatives, advocacy, and collaboration, student leaders shape the campus landscape and create a sense of belonging.
Fueling campus with energy and enthusiasm, the Huskies Pep Band is a cherished tradition at Tech. Anyone who sort of knows how to play an instrument is welcome in the pep band–there was once even an oven used as an instrument. Whether it’s pumping up the crowd at hockey games with whatever goofy hat they can find, or doing flips and cartwheels at football games after our team scores, the pep band embodies the heart and soul of Michigan Tech.
If you are simply looking for something to do on an unexciting weekend, the event calendar is always full of fun events; there’s never a dull moment at Tech. From concerts to comedy shows, movie nights to festivals, there’s always something happening on campus. The best part, most events are free thanks to our Student Activity Fee! Making connections at Tech will be a piece of cake as long as you stay involved and make the most of your college experience.
