MTU’s Learning Centers fuel student success

As a new semester begins, students at MTU are embarking on a journey filled with opportunities and challenges. Among the many resources available to support them, MTU’s Learning Centers stand out as beacons of academic assistance, guiding students toward success.

With 15 learning centers covering a diverse range of disciplines and majors, MTU offers support to meet the needs of every student. Whether grappling with calculus, unraveling the mysteries of organic chemistry, or seeking guidance in computing and business, there’s a learning center ready to provide invaluable assistance.

Reflecting on their experiences, students attest to the transformative impact of these learning centers. A third-year mechanical engineering student shares, “When I took Calculus Two as a freshman, I was on the border of failing the class, until I started visiting the Math Learning Center (MLC), and after visiting the MLC my exam grade went from a 60% to a 90%.” Similarly, Brandon Mitchell, a third-year chemical engineering student, recounts, “When I was a first year, I often went to the Chemistry Learning Center (CLC) for organic chemistry. Going to this was very key to my success in the class that I later decided to become an SI leader for organic chemistry.” A Supplemental Instruction (SI) leader is a student who has passed a class with a high grade and meets with current students to guide them through course concepts and provide study insights.

The success stories don’t end there. According to the CLC, “Students who participate in the CLC usually earn one-half to one full letter grade higher than students who don’t.” These learning centers aren’t just for students facing academic challenges; they welcome anyone seeking to enhance their understanding and performance.

Beyond boosting grades, the Learning Centers foster a sense of collaboration among students. They provide a space where learners can engage with peers, share knowledge, and deepen their understanding of complex subjects.

Navigating the academic landscape can be daunting, especially for new students. However, with the support of MTU’s Learning Centers, students can approach their studies with confidence, knowing that help is readily available whenever needed.
