Take a break from the hustle and bustle of student and college life to soak in the warm and rhythmic music of Michigan Tech’s Jazz Cabaret this weekend. The Cabaret features both new jazz musicians and guest performers.
Michigan Tech’s small jazz combos, Jaztec, Momentum and also guest artists will be offering a concert on Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. This Cabaret will provide a wonderful atmosphere for jazz and presents new and fresh young jazz musicians to the Copper Country jazz audience.
Each combination of players will be playing a minimum of three songs which are sure to please and warm you up from the cold. This is a wonderful opportunity for Michigan Tech students to put their variety of talents on display for their community.
Jazz music originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans and developed from blues and ragtime. It is seen by many as America’s “classical” music and is profoundly beautiful. It peaked in the 1920s and has since been recognized as a major form of musical expression.
The name “jazz” has origins relating back to a slang term meaning “pep” and “energy” from the 1860s. This type of music encompasses so many different kinds of music that it is hard to define, but those clear jazzy tones – the swing and blues mixed with improvisation that makes the music a game and an experience all in one – make jazz easy to identify.
The Cabaret will be held in the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in the backstage area on Jan. 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m. on both days. Take a break from studying, grading or worrying and come enjoy the music – America’s classical music.
