A place for the editors to unload
New year, new me.
Well, not really. After all, self-improvement doesn’t happen all at once. I like to think that I become a slightly better version of myself every day, like a machine learning algorithm.
The new year and new semester have brought changes for me, though, the most notable of which is my new position at The Lode. That’s right, I’ve finally ascended from a lowly copy editor (just kidding we love you guys) to my final form, a section editor. The news section to be exact. I’m a conservative’s worst nightmare- a socialist in charge at a news media outlet. Yes, I am a socialist, but the news section is for objective fact only and that’s what I promise my readers.
If I want to proselytize I’ll keep it to the opinion section. That’s what it’s there for after all. I am feeling the urge to do so lately, what with my economics class’ irritating focus on the free market. If I do have to get it off my chest in the form of a quick leftist article, keep an open mind.
I love being a part of The Lode; it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made at Tech. I urge any freshmen (and all Tech students really) to take advantage of the activities and opportunities at Tech. Build a snow statue. Participate in SafeHouse. Join a student organization.
Copy editor was a perfect job for me because of my love for both nitpicking and the English language. I have to restrain myself from correcting the most minor of mistakes in people’s grammar, so imagine my delight when I found out that I could get paid to do just that. As much as I enjoyed that position, I’m even happier as the news editor. I get to be a part of an entity that informs and entertains a whole community, and I have a real hand in it. I feel like I’m making my mark.
Alright, maybe I’m getting too full of myself. Maybe I’m overestimating the number of people that I reach. Is anybody even reading this? Hello?
