Show your true colors at the Amateur Drag Show on April 6 at 7:30 p.m. The event is hosted by Keweenaw Pride and will take place in the MUB Commons. This Amateur Drag Show is timely on campus as a much-needed space to blur lines of cultural gender and sexuality norms while fostering an inclusive community. Drag Shows are a powerful space to dismantle heteronormative roles, deconstruct colonial systems of oppression and celebrate identity. As Judith Butler, philosopher and gender theorist, said, “masculine and feminine roles are not biologically fixed but socially constructed.”
The night will feature local performers to celebrate identity in whatever expression desired. Kai Brow, Keweenaw Pride executive board member, emphasized that all students are welcome to participate or watch. “We’re expecting an awesome show and a variety of students performing, so it should be a fun time for anyone involved!” expressed Brow. If you’re looking to kick your look up a notch, accessories will be provided at the event. Judging for the night are Nancy Byers Sprague and Diane Sprague, advisors of Keweenaw Pride, along with Cass Marie, a regular queen at the MTU Drag Show.
