UFC scheduling Alvarez v. McGregor as their main fight for UFC 205 is unfair to other contenders in the league, but makes sense for the league as a whole.
Irishman Conor McGregor is currently the reigning champion of the featherweight division after knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds last December. Since then, he has not defended his championship against other featherweights, instead competing against lightweights.
McGregor was supposed to fight lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, but Anjos had to withdraw from the fight after an injury, later losing his title to Eddie Alvarez, the current champion.
If he wins, McGregor will be the first person ever to hold two championship belts.
UFC 205 is the first UFC to be held in New York City at Madison Square Garden, and is highly anticipated as a huge media event. The champion v. champion fight is generating a great deal of attention for the event.
However, there are those who are getting passed over, most notably undefeated lightweight Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov.
