Michigan Tech’s all-time shutout record holder Jamie Phillips saw ice time at the Young Stars Classic rookie tournament for the Winnipeg Jets. While the Jets lost 4-1 to the Calgary Flames Saturday, Phillips managed to block 21 out of 22 shots.
In the game versus the Vancouver Canucks Phillips stopped 25 shots total, however the Jets still fell to the Canucks 3-2. Phillips is projected to play as the backup in the AHL or starter for the ECHL’s Tulsa Oilers.
Former Husky Tanner Kero will be playing with the Rockford IceHogs and Chicago Blackhawks this season.
“Overall I just want to build on last year,” said Kero. “I thought I had overall a pretty good year but I want to be a little more consistent. I’m going to take what I learned from the first year and try to make an even bigger jump and get some more NHL games.”
Kero played against more Michigan Tech alum, former star goalie Pheonix Copley, who now plays for the Chicago Wolves as well as Alex Petan.
“I was able to have a few battles against him,” said Kero. “When Alex Petan signed at the end of the year I was able to play against him so that was pretty fun.”
Kero praised the support of the Michigan Tech community saying, “The Michigan Tech community is tremendous, there are fans all over. When they see an alumni going on and playing hockey after college their support is tremendous.”
