Michigan Tech USG welcomes new members, encourages voting on constitutional amendments

Michigan Tech’s Undergraduate Student Government (USG) met Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the MUB Superior Room to discuss organizational budgets, constitutional amendments, and to swear in newly appointed representatives.

Regarding their current budget, the Registered Student Organization (RSO) Opportunity Fund balance currently stands at $9,150.30, while the Reserve Fund has reached $254,286.82. RSOs were reminded that only 32 percent of budgets remain unspent and were urged to submit final purchase requests by Apr. 14, 2025. The Opportunity Fund typically supports smaller, immediate expenses and initiatives, while the Reserve Fund is allocated for larger, long-term projects or events benefiting the broader campus community. Organizations can request summer extensions, but budgets do not roll over into the new fiscal year starting Jul. 1, 2025.

USG is also undergoing its constitution amendment process, which requires 15 percent of the student body to get passed on to the Board of Trustees before ratification. Currently, the target of 15 percent has not been reached, and students are heavily encouraged to vote on Involvement Link since these amendments directly impact the work that USG does on campus. Highlighted changes include the addition of two student assembly members to purchase requests and budget hearings, greater representation of the student body, and increased internal oversight.

New representatives sworn in at Wednesday’s meeting include Zachary Zurschmiede (College of Sciences and Arts) and Lee Philips (Second Year Representative). Braden Quissenberry was appointed as an additional Second Year Representative, and Willard Schaub took office as the College of Engineering Representative. USG also conducted nominations and elections for a new Parliamentarian.

Event committee chair, Nathan Lithgow, announced plans for the committee responsible for campus engagement to hold an election-focused tabling event before the semester’s end.

The next USG general body meeting is scheduled for Apr. 9, 2025. For more information, you can email usg@mtu.edu, join the USG Discord server, or visit usg.mtu.edu. The form to vote on constitution amendments is located on Involvement Link at involvement.mtu.edu
