The Dance Team at Michigan Tech hosted their tenth annual spring showcase this past weekend in the wooden gymnasium at the Student Development Complex (SDC). The Dance Team was joined by the MTU cheer team and soloists from the Superior School of Dance to display a variety of dance styles. Every dance throughout the afternoon filled the dancers and audience with waves of emotion.
The showcase started at 2 p.m. on Mar. 29 with the Dance Team’s competitive pom dance that featured flashy white and silver poms. They recently competed at Sheboygan Falls High School and Ashwaubenon High School. These competition dances were displayed during this showcase displaying high levels of technique, synchronization, and passion. Younger members of the Dance Team and members not in any competition dances also got to display their moves with many routines that vary from sharp hip-hop to flowy lyrical styles. Highlights of the night were feature dances for each of the graduating members, preceding heartfelt speeches from the other members praising their senior members.
Tech’s dance team was not the only entertainment at the showcase; kids from the Superior School of Dance in Hancock, MI, were invited to perform their solo pieces. These solo dances were upwards of two and a half minutes long and displayed the endurance and creativity of these children. Overall, the showcase was a beautiful afternoon to appreciate the visual art of dance and its different iterations. The current choreography chair and future president of the Dance Team, Calah Holman, said, “I want people to leave Showcase knowing that performative art can come in all different genres and styles.” Every member of the team truly loves this performance and left members of the audience in tears with their admiration of the art form.
