Michigan Tech hosts “Laziness vs. Burnout” Husky Hour to support students during finals

Michigan Tech’s Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being will host an event titled “Laziness vs. Burnout” on Tuesday, Apr. 1, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the MUB Alumni Lounge. This Husky Hour event is designed to help students distinguish between burnout and laziness, recognize the symptoms, and equip themselves with practical strategies to manage stress, especially with finals approaching.

The interactive session, facilitated by clinical counselor Jen Wall, aims to teach students tools for self-reflection and stress management. Wall, who specializes in issues related to burnout, will lead students through activities such as an “energy audit,” which helps participants to identify how they spend their mental and physical energy, and creative self-reflection exercises involving drawing or painting.

Joshua Carlson, Outreach and Prevention Coordinator at the Center, emphasized that the goal of the event is to support students at a critical time during the academic year. “We chose April because it’s the end of the semester, finals are near, and many students start feeling overwhelmed,” Carlson said.

He added that the event’s interactive and educational nature is intentionally designed to encourage a comfortable, engaging atmosphere. Snacks will also be provided. The “Laziness vs. Burnout” Husky Hour is a free event sponsored by Michigan Tech’s  Student Health & Wellness department. Students who wish to attend can simply show up at the MUB Alumni Lounge; no prior registration is required.
