Michigan Tech hockey defenseman signed to NHL

On Mar. 9, 2025, defenseman Chase Pietila officially signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, marking the start of his professional hockey career. A standout at Michigan Tech University (MTU), Pietila was a fan favorite and the most formidable defenseman on the roster this season. Over 76 games, he showcased his physical presence, strong defensive play, and ability to contribute offensively. Pietila was known for his aggressive, hard-hitting style, making him a force on the blue line. His tenacity and physicality were evident as he led the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in penalties and penalty minutes, highlighting his gritty, no-nonsense approach. Despite his penalty-heavy reputation, Pietila stayed a reliable defenseman, frequently shutting down opposing forwards and making smart plays under pressure. Repeated attempts at interviews occurred, but Pietila was not able to speak on the subject of this matter.

The Penguins’ front office expressed excitement about adding Pietila to their defensive pipeline. His combination of size, strength, and a powerful shot makes him a promising asset for the organization. Penguins’ scouts noted his ability to clear the crease effectively and deliver punishing hits, while still maintaining the poise to make clean breakout passes. Pietila’s journey to the NHL began when he was drafted by Pittsburgh in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Draft with the 111th overall pick. His selection came after a standout collegiate career where he consistently ranked among the top defensemen in blocked shots and defensive zone efficiency. His performance at development camp and strong showings during the CCHA season further solidified his value to the team.

The three-year entry-level deal provides Pietila with the opportunity to develop within the Penguins’ system, starting in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. His physical style and ability to play heavy minutes will make him a candidate for a future NHL roster spot. MTU fans, who witnessed his rise from a promising freshman to a dominant blue-line presence, will be eagerly following as Pietila embarks on this next chapter. With his relentless work ethic and imposing defensive play, he aims to make an impact at the professional level, adding toughness and stability to the Penguins’ defensive core.
