The Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC) is offering funding for Michigan Tech students who wish to conduct research or present at professional conferences. Both undergraduate and graduate students with a GLRC faculty advisor are eligible to apply for $1,000 research grants and travel grants of up to $1,000.
The research grants aim to provide students with experience in writing competitive proposals and support research projects that may have been limited due to funding. Expenses that will be covered in the grant include equipment, travel, supplies, services, and personal costs. Recipients of the grant must volunteer for at least one GLRC activity and submit a final research report within 30 days of the grant’s end date. Applications are accepted three times per year, on the first of November, March, and July.
GLRC travel grants are awarded to students who wish to travel to present their research at professional conferences. Poster presentations can be awarded up to $750, while podium presentations can be awarded up to $1,000. Students must be advised by a GLRC faculty member to be eligible for the grant. Awardees are expected to contribute to GLRC activities, such as presenting at World Water Day, assisting with event preparations, or participating in GLRC outreach activities. Travel grant applications are reviewed on the last Friday of each month, and students must apply at least two weeks before their planned travel.
Katie Gray, Logistics Coordinator at the GLRC, advises students to be thorough and creative with their submissions.
“The more thorough you are, the more likely it will be accepted. Also, think outside the box; it’s not always a bad thing.” For travel grants, she encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunity. “Go for it. If you have an idea that you think is fantastic, go present it and show the world what you are doing.”
