With spring just around the corner, now is the best time to get outside and visit the waterfalls of the Keweenaw. So many waterfalls are only a short drive from Houghton, allowing these wonders to be accessible to any student wanting to get outside.
Due to the large amounts of snowmelt, the UP waterfalls are now flowing the most rapidly of the year. Whether you are looking for a short hike or just to see a waterfall from the comfort of your car, there are options for everyone to get outside and explore!
Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP) employee Ila Swier highly recommends Douglas Houghton Falls and Hungarian Falls for students to check out this spring. Both of these falls have short hikes to get out and see them, so Swier recommends yak tracks to help with any icy patches along the trail and to watch out for slipping since the trails get a bit muddy. She also states that if you’re planning on visiting Douglas Houghton Falls, “be prepared to get dirty because of the steep slope down to it.”
If you don’t want to hike, Swier recommends one of her personal favorite falls of the region, Jacobs Falls, which can be viewed from the road.
Overall, spring allows for an excellent opportunity to get out and see the waterfalls. “Springtime is a great season to start taking advantage of the nice weather and see the falls or other lovely destinations in the Keweenaw,” says Swier.
