What happened to my links? Michigan Tech moves to Ellucian Experience

Michigan Tech is rolling out a new management system, Ellucian Experience, to replace MyMichiganTech and Banweb, aiming to streamline access to essential student services. The transition has been in the works since before the beginning of the academic year, and is expected to be mostly completed by the end of the semester.

Experience, launched in Nov. 2024, introduces a mobile-friendly, modern interface with role-based, keyword-searchable cards that display only information relevant to each user. The dashboard is fully customizable, allowing students to bookmark and reorder content as needed. Information is also organized in a category-based menu, with additional resources provided. According to Shellie Hubert, assistant director of enterprise application services, the system acts as a “top-level menu,” serving as the primary portal for students, faculty, and staff to access the required services.

Banweb will seamlessly transition into separate self-service portals, with Experience integrating them into a unified system. The new student self-service will provide students with a student profile, allowing them to see their academic and testing records, course schedules, registration details, grades, and degree evaluation. “You have all of your personal student information in one spot,” said Hubert.

The new registration system will feature five key components: preparing for registration, planning ahead, browsing for classes, completing registration, and viewing schedules. Students will be able to create multiple course plans, with a readily available calendar for viewing, and easily submit them when registration opens. “When you are ready to register, all you have to do is open your plan, click add, … and then hit submit,” Hubert explained. The browsing tool is designed to be more user-friendly than Banweb, allowing students to plan and register more efficiently. “I think it will be a lot easier for students to read,” said Theresa Jacques, the university registrar.

Experience has already been used by students during the fall semester to pay their spring bills, and the student self-service profile is expected to go live in March. Approximately 80 percent of pages on the Michigan Tech website (mtu.edu) now direct users to Experience. Banweb will remain available until the end of the semester when grades are finished, but as features are incorporated into Experience and self-service, they may begin to be shut down in phases before then. Guest access and student checklist features will remain in MyMichiganTech until their replacements launch.

Michigan Tech will implement a new degree audit and advising software in the fall, further enhancing academic planning for students. “It all ties together,” said Jacques. “I think it will be really, really good for students.”

With major changes starting in mid-March and continuing into April, students are encouraged to explore Experience before MyMichiganTech and Banweb are phased out. “The important thing for people to know is that both systems work as long as they’re available,” Hubert emphasized. “If they want to know where they really should go, they should go to Experience.”

To promote more information about Ellucian Experience, the IT department is actively updating its knowledge base, and users are encouraged to submit feedback through the “Share your Feedback” tab under the “Resources” menu in Experience. Experience is accessible at mtu.edu/experience.
