The Michigan Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA) took effect on Feb. 21, 2025, extending sick leave benefits to all employees, including part-time, temporary, and student workers. The regulation requires an accumulation rate of one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Employees can find out how much sick leave they have left by using the Human Resources card in Experience.
Earned sick time under the new policy can be used for a variety of reasons, including personal or family illness, medical visits, and preventive care. Employees may also use their leave if they or a family member experience domestic abuse or sexual assault, allowing time for medical treatment, psychological counseling, relocation, or legal proceedings. The policy also includes time off for things like school meetings or appointments related to your child’s health, disabilities, or issues from domestic violence. Employees can also take leave during public health emergencies, such as when authorities mandate a workplace closure or when a health official determines that an employee or their family member’s exposure to a contagious disease may pose a risk to others. This expanded coverage ensures that employees have the flexibility and security to handle critical life situations without fear of job loss or financial strain.
Dan Carney, chief human resources officer at Michigan Tech, elucidated the policy’s importance: “This update ensures that all employees, regardless of employment status, have access to essential sick leave benefits.” It’s a step toward a healthier, more supportive workplace.
The definition of “family member” under ESTA is broad, including biological, adopted, and resource family, including domestic partners and individuals with a close familial bond. This ensures that employees can take time off to care for loved ones without worrying about financial or job security. By recognizing non-traditional family structures, the policy acknowledges the diverse needs of today’s workforce and provides a more comprehensive approach to paid leave.
With this transition, Michigan Tech aligns with other institutions by adopting state-mandated benefits to create a fairer work environment. Access to paid sick leave enhances job satisfaction, reduces workplace illnesses, and increases productivity. As the policy takes effect, employees can expect a more accommodating and health-conscious workplace that balances well-being with operational needs.
