Houghton’s own Cyberia Cafe, a staple for students and locals, officially closed on Mar. 1, marking the end of an era. The owner, Steve Macke, made the difficult decision to shut down the cafe to focus on his other business, M&M Title, also located in Houghton. “I just didn’t have enough time to run two businesses at the same time,” he explained.
“Since 2002, Cyberia Cafe has brought Keweenaw the finest beverages and experiences studying or visiting with friends, be it downtown or at Cyberia Express,” the business wrote in a Facebook post. “The past 23 years have been a wonderful time with all of the great customers and staff members whom I have come to know and appreciate.”
Cyberia first opened in the spring of 2002 and quickly became a popular spot among Michigan Tech students and Houghton residents. Students came for drinks and a quiet study spot while residents enjoyed the beverages and events.
During its final week, longtime customers made sure to visit and get their last fix. Many expressed sadness, gratitude, and nostalgia as they ordered what would be their final cup of Cyberia coffee. “A lot of people came up to me with heartbreak during the last week,” Macke said. “Cyberia meant a lot to the community.” Its absence will be deeply felt by those who found comfort within its walls.
While the cafe’s closure is a loss for downtown Houghton, its impact on the community will not be forgotten.
