Michigan Tech has officially opened course registration, allowing students to enroll in classes for the Fall 2025 semester. Registration began on Sunday, Mar. 9, for graduate students and will continue to follow a staggered schedule based on class standing and earned credits at the time of registration. The period closes at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 30, and reopens at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 1. Additionally, students will be unable to register from 2:00 to 2:30 a.m. each day.
Priority registration is given to graduate students and seniors, followed by juniors, sophomores, and freshmen in that order. Incoming first-year students will have their schedule prepared by the Registrar’s Office in mid-July.
To secure the classes you want, it is critical to prepare ahead of time. Once you know what classes you would like to take, check whether they still have open seats and write down the Course Registration Number (CRN) for each class. Many students create hotkey scripts to quickly submit their course selections during registration. Open the “Add/Drop Classes” page 4-5 minutes before your registration period opens and refresh to quickly begin registration. Third-party websites are also popular among students but should always be fact-checked with course information from Banweb. If you’re looking to find classes that fulfill a specific Gen Ed requirement, you can utilize the “Advanced Search” feature under “Look-Up Classes to Add.”
“[When registering], the biggest thing is being aware of your registration time,” said Travis Wakeham, Undergraduate Academic Advisor for Biological Sciences and Coordinator of Academic Advising. “Another challenge for new students is figuring out what your degree requirements are, how to read a catalog, and knowing what all the different registration restrictions mean”. To ensure that you stay on track to register, it’s critical for students to check their degree audit on Banweb and meet with their advisor prior to their registration time. It’s also important to remain mindful of your catalog term when consulting flowcharts and degree audits, as they change year to year.
With the new Essential Education program replacing General Education for incoming first-years in Fall 2025, many currently enrolled students have questions about how the change impacts their registration. “Any current students can continue following General Education,” said Wakeham. New Essential Education courses have been added to the General Education lists for this reason.
For any questions regarding individual academic requirements, please contact your academic advisor.
