The Michigan Tech hockey team played against Ferris State University (FSU) during the first weekend of spring break for the last regular season games on home ice. The first game on Feb. 21 had a win from MTU with a final score of 6-1. The second game on Feb. 22 ended with a final score of 2-3 and an FSU win to split the weekend. Senior Night occurred after the second game on Saturday and gave a sendoff to five of the team’s graduating seniors.
The first game started off with tons of energy from both the team and the fans. The team scored three goals in the first period, including a shorthanded goal by Alex Nordstrom during an FSU power play. Nordstrom continued his streak into the second period by scoring two more goals to secure a hat trick for the night. After this 5-0 lead for Tech, FSU decided to swap out their goalie in the middle of the second period. Both teams were able to secure one more goal for the night to end the first game of the weekend 6-1 in favor of the Huskies.
The second game began with two goals from the Huskies, but that is where the momentum began to falter. FSU scored two goals during the second period to tie the game. FSU scored one more goal in the third period to secure their victory in the second game. It was a night to honor the seniors that have fought long and hard with the MTU Huskies, and it was a shame that two of those seniors – Trevor Russel and Jack Works – had to be absent from playing on the ice due to injuries. Huskies head coach, Joe Shawhan, said, “The heartbreaking thing for me is you got [Russel] out on his senior night; you’ve got [Works] out, our captain, on his senior night… but they are going to get dressed and they are going to go out and be celebrated at the end of the game.”
