Student Tips: Midterms

As midterms approach, many college students begin to feel the pressure. While exams can be stressful, proper preparation can reduce anxiety and improve performance.

“It’s never too early to start planning,” said Susan Liebau, academic advisor for chemistry undergraduate students and director of the Chemistry Learning Center. “The best way to study is to keep up and go over things regularly… and then use resources like instructor office hours and learning centers to supplement.”

Time management is critical. Developing a study schedule or outline in advance allows students to break material into manageable sections and avoid last-minute cramming. Active study techniques such as flashcards, practice problems, and explaining concepts to others can enhance retention. Reviewing past exams can also help students familiarize themselves with question formats.

Maintaining overall well-being is just as important. Chronic sleep deprivation and all-nighters impair concentration and memory, making seven to nine hours of sleep a night essential. A balanced diet and regular physical activity can further boost energy and focus.

Midterms are a challenge, so students should also take advantage of available resources. Learning center coaches can clarify concepts and offer study strategies, while professor office hours allow direct academic support. Success Coaches at the Waino Wahtera Center for Student Success can assist with time management, study skills, and recommending other campus resources.
