The Deans’ Teaching Showcase was nominated to Kerri Sleeman for the fifth week of this spring semester. Sleeman was identified as an outstanding instructor by the College of Engineering Dean, Michelle Scherer. Sleeman is a professor of practice in construction engineering with a joint appointment in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering and the College of Business.
Each spring semester, college Deans recognize exceptional instructors within their fields. Thirteen nominees are announced weekly throughout the semester, and there will be an end-of-term event to recognize Sleeman and all other nominees.
“Honored that my fellow teaching professionals and students recognize my efforts to bring relevant industry knowledge into the classroom”, stated Sleeman.
A memorable teaching moment for Sleeman was when she first started teaching the class construction scheduling. She sent out a mid-term survey and received a comment from a student who thought the class should be taught by a more qualified professor. A few years later, a transfer student took her building utilities class and told her that this class was the most relevant information the student had ever learned in a class. Sleeman learned that as a teacher, “you have to figure out who you are and follow it”.
Sleeman continues to bring relevant industry knowledge into the classroom by implementing projects like East Dorm tours, learning more about the sustainability of the H-STEM, and more pre-bid walk-throughs for projects in the community or MTU.
Sleeman is an inspiring professor at MTU, and her lasting impact is evident in each student she teaches.
