Blue Key National Honor Society held a Winter Carnival wrap-up on Feb. 13 in Rehki G006 to gather feedback and discuss improvements for next year. Public participation was minimal, with only two non-Blue Key student representatives. Key areas of focus included communication, the rulebook, and event organization. A Google Form was later sent via the Winter Carnival email list to collect additional feedback.
A large focus was on improving communication. The primary complaint was the lack of clarity for students not signed up for the email list. The email list will now be updated annually, as a large portion of recipients are no longer enrolled at MTU. Blue Key also plans to add a mailing list sign-up feature to the Michigan Tech Winter Carnival website. They are also planning on providing additional info on the website. Other internal changes will be made to improve communications with event hosts.
Organizers also discussed concerns over language in the rulebook. Many sections contain too much gray area. Key changes for next year may improve clarity, and a reordering of information based on importance. The special events section, in particular, is expected to undergo significant revisions. One change highlighted was a possible increase in the penalty for signing up for an event and not attending. Changes will also be made so events will say ‘to be determined’ before it’s booked.
Blue Key President Skyler Spitzley emphasized the importance of the wrap-up session, stating, “It’s important as the organizers of Carni to get feedback, to make Winter Carnival better for all students.” During the wrap-up, Winter Carnival was deemed mostly successful.
