On Feb. 13, 2025, it was announced that MTU had joined the ranks of 187 other institutions around the U.S. as a Research 1 (R1) classified institution. This classification is reserved for institutions with high spending and doctorate production. With over $50 million spent on research and over 70 research doctorates awarded annually, MTU has been growing its research program over the past two decades, with a growth of 300 percent in expenditures since 2004, now reaching approximately 107 million dollars. Furthermore, on average MTU has 85 doctoral degrees awarded annually. With this classification, MTU is the fourth university in Michigan to achieve R1 status, along with Wayne State University, University of Michigan, and Michigan State University.
When asked how this classification will impact students here at Tech, the Vice President of Research Andrew Barnard says, “There will be more research opportunities for undergraduate students. I also expect our ability to attract world-class graduate students to Michigan Tech to increase with our R1 ranking. Students’ educations will be closely linked to cutting-edge research and development happening at Michigan Tech.” This classification exemplifies the high standard of research here at Tech, and tells the rest of the world, as Barnard says, that MTU has “a proven track record for delivering impactful results and technological innovations.” This will help Tech grow its relationship with industry, government, and academia, potentially unlocking more federal funding reserved for R1 institutions.
